"Lucifer" (1897) by Richard Roland Holst is a powerful Symbolist painting that portrays the Fallen Angel Lucifer as a brooding, potent, dark figure. It was created for a theatrical performance of the play Lucifer and depicts his descent into Hell and the creation of good & evil. In this work, Lucifer is depicted with a commanding presence, exuding both strength and melancholy. The painting emphasizes his fall from grace and his complex nature—rebellious yet tragic.

Roalnd-Holst was a Rosicrucian mystic considered the master of the Dutch Art Nouveau - JUGENDSTIL - movement. His use of dark, muted tones and flowing lines reflects the spiritual and moral themes of the painting, exploring ideas of pride, rebellion, and katabasis. The composition is highly stylized, typical of Symbolism, focusing on the struggle of Lucifer as he grapples with his fate. The work is a reflection of Holst’s interest in mysticism, philosophical questions, and the duality of good and evil.
